The Bulgarian Bar is free, independent and autonomous. It assists citizens and judicial persons in the defence of their rights and legitimate interests.

Attorneys are members of Bar Associations by law. The regions, number and the seats of the Bar Associations are determined by the Supreme Bar Council. To date there are 27 Bar Associations. Their number is equal to the number of the District Courts in the Republic of Bulgaria.

Bar Association's authorities are: the General Assembly, the Bar Council, the Supervisory Council and the Disciplinary Court. The General Assembly is composed of the attorneys admitted to the Bar Association. The Chairpersons of the Bar Council and the Disciplinary Court as well as their members and the members of the Supervisory Council are elected by the General Assembly for a term of 2 years.
